HOME OF THE RIVER OF GRASS !!!!

Miramar Elementary Manatees

This page will show some of the exciting and interesting lessons we learned about a part the Florida Everglades in SOUTH FLORIDA

First thing we had to take a bus ride WEST until we ran out of HIGHWAY.

I'm READY....I'M READY

We followed a CANAL that flows from where all the people live and is pumped into our EVERGLADES.

FINALLY we arrived and were greeted by our instructors and guides. They put us in groups by EVERGLADES ANIMAL NAMES like anhinga, apple snails, vultures and "blood sucking" MOSQUITOS

Then the instructors told us some HISTORY and IMPORTANT facts about the RIVER of GRASS.

SHE'S LIME ROCK BASE

We're ALL CONNECTED, SO WE'RE ALL AFFECTED

Now we find out about the AIRBOAT ride and get a sheet to check off the animals we will observe, and a sheet with COLOR PHOTOGRAPHS to assist us in the identification. We also find out that we will be MEASURING the TEMPERATURE, DEPTH and PH LEVELS of the WATER.

Here we go to ride an AIRBOAT in the EVERGLADES.

As we took our LONG walk to the AIRBOATS, THE GUIDE informed us about the MAN MADE and NATURAL attributes of the EVERGLADES.

A LEVEE that holds WATER IN the everglades.....MAN MADE.

The VIEW from ON TOP of the LEVEE....PURE NATURE.

Here the GUIDE explains the DIFFERENCE in NATURAL and MAN MADE.....

I'M READYI'M READY

OH MY !! I am so glad to see you are still here...
Keep looking, there is more to see.

The guide explains the SAFETY rules on the AIRBOAT.

The PUMP STATION that pumps water into and out of the EVERGLADES. HEY LOOK!!!!, there are some BIRDS.

AND we are off to EXPLORE the FLORA and FAUNA of the EVERGLADES...

Cat Tails like dirty water and SAWGRASS likes CLEAN water. Cat Tail grass will not cut you, but SAWGRASS will. This student volunteers to see if we are in DIRTY or CLEAN water....

This is one time it is better to be in dirty water......no CUTS..

NOW the GUIDE instructs us how to MEASURE the TEMPERATURE, DEPTH and PH of the WATER.

HEY ...What is this STUFF ???

Well, let's investigate....FIRST PERSON pick it up and squeeze it......

SCOND person, observe the texture and colors.......

THIRD person smell it.......

FOURTH person pull it apart and observe how it looks.......

LAST person squeeze it again and put the ALLIGATOR VOMIT back in the water....EEEEUUUUUWWWW !!!!

NOT REALLY....ITS ACTUALLY ALGAE.....any of numerous groups of chlorophyll-containing, mainly aquatic eukaryotic organisms ranging from microscopic single-celled forms to multicellular forms 100 ft. (30 m) or more long, distinguished from plants by the absence of true roots, stems, and leaves.

HEY YOU ! Don't leave yet, there is still more to see.

FINISHED with the investigations of the ALGAE and MEASURING, we move on to observe more animal life in the EVERGLADES.

VULTURE ISLAND....

Do you see the ALLIGATOR ??

BACK at the EVERGLADES RESEARCH LAB, we are getting ready to investigate what kinds of LIFE there is in the WATERS of the EVERGLADES.

Our GUIDE explains the procedures and gives us color photographs to help us identify what we observe......

AND NOW we are going into the SWAMP.......I think we are going to find out why they look like this !!!!!!

ON the way to the SWAMP, our GUIDE tells us about INVASIVE PLANTS....

AND the LIME ROCK and how it helps to CLEAN the WATER....

AND the SOFT area around the SWAMP.....We also received instructions on how to use the POLE to POKE in front to find holes and rocks in the SWAMP.....

Some vegitation found in the SWAMP.....Some FILTER water, some are EDIBLE and some indicate the SHALLOW depth of the WATER....AND they are ALL BEAUTIFUL....

SNAIL EGGS.......

Here we are digging up some PEAT.....(Partially decayed vegetable matter, especially peat moss, found in bogs. The low levels of oxygen and the acidic environment in bogs prevent the degradation of peat. Peat is burned as fuel and also used as fertilizer.).... from the bottom to observe the characteristics......

FINALLY we learn how to PROTECT OURSELVES as we WALK THROUGH SAWGRASS to EXIT THE SWAMP....

After a GREAT day in THE EVERGLADES, we follow the TRAIL back to the BUS and back to SCHOOL.
